Mouna Rebeiz, the French Lebanese artist, painter and philanthropist will exhibit her second UK solo show ‘The trash-ic. Or trash in the face of beauty’. We interviewed her for the June issue of Country & Town House about her new exhibition that will be at the Saatchi Gallery from 31 May-7 June.
In tandem with the exhibition, Rebeiz has called upon a select few internationally renowned designers and artists to produce their own ceramic piggy-bank designs.
How These Designer Piggy Banks Are Doing Good Deeds
The piggy banks will be part of an online auction that goes live on 17 May in support of the charity Innocence in Danger, which supports minors who are at risk of sexual abuse. Each design was molded in the furnaces of Nove di Bassano in Italy. A select few piggy banks will be auctioned live on the opening night of the exhibition, 31 May, by Sotheby’s.
‘I have been supporting Homayra [Sellier] with her charity for 15 years, and it was something of a coincidence when she said she was looking to expand in the UK, as I was moving here, so I said, “Let’s build something together”.’ – Mouna Rebeiz
True to her word, the artist used her influence across fashion, design and the visual arts to mount the charity’s first London auction, at her show in 2015. Now, she is revisiting the format at The Saatchi Gallery.
‘The trash-ic. Or trash in the face of beauty’ will present Rebeiz’s personal view on current societal issues. Each work displayed is not about painting trash as much as it is about painting a period defined by trashy content. Rebeiz attempts to comprehend and pierce the mystery of a world in which we can feel alien and displaced (yet with so much technology to keep us together).
