HowTheLightGetsIn London 2021: What’s On?
Which came first, the chicken or the egg? Is science objective? How can we implement radical change? These are just some of the big questions being delved into at HowTheLightGetsIn London 2021, the world’s largest philosophy and music festival, which will return to Hampstead Heath’s Kenwood House this September.
Taking place from the 18th-19th September, the weekend festival is presented by The Institute of Art and Ideas, and will host over 100 events that bring together internationally respected thinkers as well as musicians, performers and artists. There’ll be entertainment, dancing, and debates on everything from Memes to Magic, all designed to push the limits of what we know, and centred around this Septembers theme: Dreams and Jeopardy.
Headline speakers include labour politician Baroness ‘Shami’ Chakrabati, leading LGBT advocate Peter Tatchell and trailblazing feminist Laurie Penny, who alongside award-winning political journalism has also written for HBO’s The Nevers and Netflix’s The Haunting of Bly Manor. There’s also rapper-turned activist Lowkey, economics commentator Grace Blakely and MacArthur Fellowship recipient Patricia Churchland, who’s ground-breaking research into the mind founded a whole new field of thought: neurophilosophy
Alongside fascinating debates, music and comedy are an essential part of all HowTheLightGetsIn festivals. This year’s line-up includes afro-funk group London Afrobeat Collective, R&B star MEI, and former member of The Correspondents Mr Bruce. There will also be dreamy bedroom pop from Rosehip Teahouse, satirical neo-cabaret from the sequin-clad double act Bourgeois & Maurice, and stand-up comedy from Chloe Petts and Ivo Graham.
The festival marks HowTheLightGetsIn’s much anticipated return to live events. Over lockdown they produced four online festivals and pioneered a virtual reality festival experience. Director Hilary Lawson said, “We can’t wait to welcome everyone back to a real world festival and a weekend of electrifying debate, music, comedy, and our legendary party atmosphere.”
