What Is Frieze London?

Frieze London is an annual, five-day-long contemporary art fair taking place every October that was developed by the founders of Frieze magazine, Amanda Sharp and Matthew Slotover. Running since 2003, it has expanded from London to include editions in three more cities: Los Angeles, New York and Seoul. It’s one of the few fairs dedicated to contemporary art and living artists – and one of the best respected. That said, since 2012, Frieze Masters has also taken place, a separate event dedicated to art made before the year 2000 – providing a unique, contemporary perspective on historical art, from collectible objects to significant masterpieces.

One of the world’s most influential contemporary art fairs, over 180 exhibiting galleries travel from across the globe every year to represent some of the world’s most exciting artists at Frieze London. Plus, visitors flock from all four corners of the world to visit across the five-day period, with attendance rising from just under 28,000 in 2003 to around 60,000 in recent years.

Talks

Frieze is well-known for its roster of insightful talks, and 2023 is no different, with artist, curators and other art-world professionals discussing a spectrum of topics from contemporary trends to niche historical moments in art.

Frieze Masters

A stone’s throw from Frieze London – still within verdant Regent’s Park – is Frieze Masters, the annual sister fair dedicated to art created before the year 2000.

Frieze Sculpture

Meanwhile, Frieze Sculpture takes over the entirety of Regents Park’s English Gardens at the South End of The Broadwalk, a major display of outdoor works curated by Clare Lilley, Director of Programme at the Yorkshire Sculpture Park. It’s free, open to all, and runs throughout October.
