A genre-spanning new music series showcasing an eclectic mix of global sounds has kicked off at Brixton Village.
Free for the public to attend, DJ sessions from some of London’s most respected music selectors will take place in the market with live music performances planned for the coming weeks. This is the first curated music programme for the market as a whole in Brixton Village’s 81-year history.
Local husband and wife DJ duo Chris Ellis and Cyndi Anafo – aka the Handson Family – have been appointed by the new owners of Brixton Village and Market Row, Hondo Enterprises, to create a programme of music events taking place on Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
Sharing extensive music interests from funk, soul, reggae, afrobeat to jazz, hip hop and dance, Chris and Cyndi have been DJing and promoting independent black music in London for nearly 20 years and are known for their ability to tailor specific music and events to a given environment.
In 2010, the couple co-founded culturally important Brixton Village-based lifestyle store United80 and later created a pop-up bar in the market called Snugg with Brixton Design Trail’s Binki Taylor, where they curated performances from local and international artists and DJs including Lalah Hathaway, Rushaan Patterson, Yaaba Funk, United Vibrations, DJ Spinna, Gilles Peterson’s Havana Cultura Band, Atjazz, Jesse Boykins III, as well as hosting an annual Basement Jaxx DJ session.
Passionate about collaboration, whilst DJing as guests and holding a monthly residency at Near & Far at Peckham Levels, Chris and Cyndi also co-produce a much-loved family-friendly Brixton block party event with Mercury Prize-nominated rapper and producer TY. The pair also work with progressive jazz organisation Jazz Re:freshed.
The next event on 31, October will be French Mama, where the village will mix champagne with gooey raclette as special guest DJ French Mama lays down some delicious grooves.
Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
