Spend a summer’s day outside surrounded by nature this coming Saturday at the National Trust’s Swan Barn Farm in Surrey. Perfect for crafty types, it’s a day dedicated to just that: countryside crafts. Members of the Black Down estate will be there, demonstrating their skills and teaching attendees everything from traditional woodworking to pole lathing, carving to timber hewing. Try your hand at willow weaving and making roof shingles, pencils and fencing products whilst getting an insight into what life is like on the farm and what it’s like to work on the estate. There’ll also be falconry and bat displays alongside a bouncy castle and plenty of refreshments, including a barbeque serving up veggie and non veggie options to make it a fun family day out.
The location, with very convenient public transport connections from London, is a slice of countryside tranquillity just a stone’s throw from Haslemere High Street. Haslemere is a historic market town, so why not enrich your day out with the ‘Swan Barn Farm well, woodland and meadow walk’ which takes you past the best sights to see such as the medieval dipping well, a traditional orchard full of grazing sheep, and other streams, meadows and woodland areas. The woodland is a wonderful area to spot local wildlife and to set up a picnic in.
The Countryside Rangers of Swan Barn Farm are who make it as beautiful and natural as it is. Passionate about conservation and crafts, have a chat with the rangers who’ll be around during the day to hear about their work and how you too can get involved in preserving Swan Barn Farm!
