Although known and beloved as a landmark of British tradition (plus delectable mince pies come Christmas time), Fortnum & Mason’s annual art project sees the luxury department store pushing the boat out to offer a feast for the eyes as well as the stomach.
For their annual artistic initiative, this year Fortnum’s is collaborating with celebrated contemporary artist Zhang Enli. The Shangai-based artist, known for being the first ever Chinese artist-in-residence at the Royal Academy, is famous for an uninhabited, intuitive approach to colour and form. Beginning in September, Fortnum’s duck-egg blue interiors will take on a whole new life courtesy of the acclaimed artist. Working directly with Zhang Enli and supporting him to create this new body of work, Fortnum’s will be adorned with 28 pieces, including 19 never-before-seen specially commissioned paintings alongside a 6-metre site-specific work.
Taking inspiration from his increased travels across the UK, the new pieces harness themes of travel, mapping, immigration and relocation, through topographical watercolours that demonstrate a mastery of expressive lines influenced by traditional Chinese brush painting. In addition to the powerful pieces on show, shoppers will have the chance to take a little of the art home with prints available to purchase as well as a beautiful limited-edition cashmere scarf designed by Zhang Enli.
