Read our insider’s guide to Hampton Court Palace Festival from Liz Young, Head of Events and Commercial Services at Historic Royal Palaces…
Hampton Court Palace Festival is a truly distinctive festival. The intimate 3,000 seat auditorium makes for a unique concert, with guests watching world-class musical entertainment in the courtyard of one of England’s historic royal palaces previously owned by King Henry VIII. The sumptuous gardens surrounding the palace allow for attendees to enjoy a spot of picnicking before the concert and soak up the atmosphere against the stunning backdrop of the Palace. The mix of history and the world’s greatest musicians in an intimate space makes for a really special and unique experience.
New to the festival this year is the outdoor acoustic stage, supported by the event partners VikingCruises. Guests will watch performances from rising talent in the East Front Gardens before the concert, providing a relaxing musical back drop to enjoy with their picnics. Also new for this year is a larger Theatre Bar installed inside the festival’s auditorium.
Arriving in good time ahead of the concert, attendees can bask in the British sunshine watching some of the UK’s emerging singer-songwriters and acoustic acts whilst enjoying their picnics and a glass of Champagne PIAFF. After enjoying their summer drinks and snacks, guests will make their way through the palace and take in some of the breath-taking historic architecture before entering the intimate auditorium in Base Court to enjoy an unforgettable night of stunning music!

Where? Hampton Court Palace, Surrey
What? Lionel Richie has been announced to headline this year’s festival on 5 and 6 June; his only London shows of 2018. Gary Barlow, Jools Holland and The Beach Boys have also been named for this year’s line-up. Artists perform to a beautiful backdrop in Henry VIII’s open air Base Court for an intimate audience of 3,000 at what is sure to be one of the summer’s biggest celebrations.
Where to stay? The Bingham, Richmond, London. This glamorous, intimate riverside hotel began life as two Georgian townhouses, later joined together by Lady Anne Bingham, a forebear of Lord Lucan. Crikey. Today’s owner, Samantha Trinder, ably assisted by brilliant general manager Erick Kervaon, has created a special place in which to stay and dine. Slick and contemporary, the hotel has the friendliest staff, a fun cocktail bar and a beautiful restaurant, a Richmond hotspot where natural modern British cuisine excels. But it’s the setting that adds the extra magic here, and the view. Doubles from £164.
