Cheese fiends, your prayers have been answered. The team behind Camden’s famed Cheese Bar have launched the world’s first cheese conveyer belt concept: Pick & Cheese in Seven Dials Market. Here, diners can grab plate after plate from the 40-metre cheese-laden conveyer belt, picking from an all-British selection of small producer cheeses – from buttery Gubbeen to farmhouse-style Fellstone. This November they’re launching a series of takeovers, in which a guest cheesemonger will be invited to showcase their signature cheeses on the belt, alongside a selection of special hot dishes, condiments, desserts and drinks.
First up is Paxton & Whitfield, the iconic cheesemonger dating back to 1797. From 6pm on 27 November, they’ll be loading up the conveyer belt with a selection of their finest cheeses, including Paxton’s Cave Aged Cheddar with Celery Sea Salt Oaties and Proper Piccalilli. They’ll also be dishing up an off-belt traditional Tartiflette, followed by a dessert of Mont d’Or ice cream with truffle honey and honeycomb. Guests can enjoy this alongside natural wines from Pick & Cheese and Paxton & Whitfield’s Vintage Port.
This will be followed by Patricia Michelson of La Fromagerie in January 2020 (what better way to break your New Year health kick?) This menu will focus on French cheeses, including a Brie de Meaux with a special mix of creme fraiche, mascarpone and black truffles, served with Charcoal Biscuits and paired with Patricia’s house Champagne; Beaufort Chalet d’Alpage with fig roll; and Old Groendal, a farmhouse hand-made aged cheese from Belgium in the Gouda style, served with an ale chutney and paired with a Kernel IPA.
The Cheese Bar Founder Matthew Carver says: ‘I’m beyond excited to welcome some of the UK’s most respected cheesemongers to the belt, we can’t wait to see what each of them brings! Serving great cheese is what Pick & Cheese is all about and these guys do it better than anyone else.’
Annie Meakin, key account manager from Paxton & Whitfield, adds: ‘We are really looking forward to what is sure to be a wonderful celebration of cheese with Pick & Cheese. It’s such a great opportunity for London’s oldest cheesemonger to collaborate with one of the newest and most innovative cheese offerings around. It has been fantastic for our team to explore our range in a new way in order to discover some exciting and creative pairings that we hope will stand out on the belt.’
