It may be cold outside, it may be January, but who says we can’t drink gin outdoors? The Hot Gin Roof returns to Ham Yard Hotel this month, running in partnership with craft gin pioneers Sipsmith. From 24 January guests are invited to enjoy gin cocktails amid the chic surroundings of the hotel’s private roof terrace. Sipsmith Master Distiller Jared Brown and Ham Yard Hotel’s expert cocktail team have crafted a menu featuring both hot and cold drinks – as well as some low and no alcohol options, perfect if you’re doing Dry January.
Firm favourites from previous years will be making an appearance, including the signature Hot G&T and the Reverse Martini. Newbies, meanwhile, include the Iced Clover Club, garnished with a flaming kumquat; Temperature Punch, served from a cauldron on the barbecue; and the Swanky-Panky, served hot or cold with a sloe gin compote. All drinks come with a food pairing, which could be anything from orange marshmallow to venison pie.
Fancy learning more about gin? Every Thursday evening Sipsmith’s Jared Brown will be hosting intimate masterclasses, offering guests a chance to learn about the history of gin. To give you a snippet, the hot gin concept dates back to the 18th century: it would appear at London’s winter Frost Fairs, which took place when the River Thames froze over and transformed into a winter playground.
Sipsmith set up the first copper distillery in London ten years ago, spearheaded by founders Sam, Fairfax and Jared. Their mission was simple: to bring high-quality dry gin back to the city where it first earned its name. Every bottle of Simpsmith gin is hand-crafted in small batches, with a team of five distillers on three copper stills.
