George Underwood, the esteemed David Bowie collaborator, musician and artist, will host a solo exhibition in Gloucestershire’s The Fosse Gallery. The exhibition will consist of approximately 30 oil paintings, all available for purchase (and of course, admiration) with prices ranging from £950 – £10,000.
George Underwood’s career intertwines his passions for art and music. After attending Beckenham Art School in 1963, the young artist, in the hopes of making a career in the music industry, he recorded a solo record with lifelong friend David Bowie under the name Calvin James. After this short but successful stint, he returned to his art studies and worked in design studios as an illustrator, specialising in his interests; horror, fantasy, and science fiction book covers. It was when he designed the album covers for T Rex and David Bowie’s Ziggy Stardust and Hunky Dory that he was really recognised as a leading art illustrator. After years of specialising in painting and creating countless creative album and book covers, portraits, drawings and advertisements, Underwood began to work with oil paints, in the 1970s.
‘George has, over the years, refined his work to the point where I would put him among the top figurative painters coming out of the UK right now. There’s a sublime isolation surrounding his subjects that really touches the viewer, the figures being both heroic and vulnerable simultaneously. There’s a timeless element in the choice of subject matter that overlaps with the mythical world of Odd Nerdrum, say. Now that a huge shift to painting is taking place, I would expect to see George’s name pushed further and further to the front’ – David Bowie
The Fosse Gallery sits within a typical Cotswold manor house, which is known as one of the UK’s most important art galleries outside of London. Since being founded in 1980, it has showcased some of the most prestigious British contemporary artists.
