Celebrating 60 years of lighting up London’s most iconic street come Christmas, Oxford Street is pulling out all the stops this year, with a futuristic LED-inspired festive display. As the most extensive shopping street in Europe, Oxford Street’s is one of the most highly anticipated Christmas switch-ons of the year, drawing in visitors from far and wide and spreading merriment across the capital.
One of the last to switch on the lights, the West End will finally be illuminated on 21 November, where the public are invited to join in with an array of celebratory festivities. The UK’s leading hip-hop station, Capital XTRA will be providing the entertainment with an array of live in-store performances taking place across the street, while some of the shopping destination’s biggest brands will be hosting a range of exclusive offers and events, staying open for the first stint of late-night shopping under the lights.
Of course, the pièce de résistance is the Christmas lights themselves, which this year prevail with a forward-thinking twist. 27 illuminative LED light curtains will be suspended above the street, comprising of an impressive 220,000 twinkling lights. But what’s more, this year’s display employs LED technology, meaning up to 90 per cent of energy is saved in comparison to the more traditional Christmas light displays of the past; a more progressive and contemporary approach to an established festive celebration.
Luciana Magliocco, Associate Director at New West End Company said: ‘Oxford Street is an internationally renowned shopping and leisure destination and forever at the forefront of technological advances and industry innovation. This year’s brand new light scheme showcases how the street continues to push boundaries to offer an unrivalled festive shopping experience for visitors and tourists alike.’
