For 3 months this summer, Bompas & Parr collaborate with The British Museum of Food to host the inaugural exhibition centring on Britain’s favourite summer treat – the mighty ice cream. Taking residence until late September, SCOOP: The Wonderful World of Ice Cream, will host a total sensory immersion, taking visitors on a journey to explore the sheer magic of the frozen treat. Learn about the history, view the world’s largest collection of never-before-seen ice cream paraphernalia, and immerse yourself in experiences including ‘Ice-Cream Weather’, ‘Glow-in-the-dark Ice Cream’, ‘The Neuroscience of the Frozen Treat’ and ‘The Dark Side of Desserts’.
Coinciding with the 300th anniversary of the very first printed ice-cream recipe, the exhibition boasts a wide range of activities to encapsulate the joy of ice cream and engross the public its unexpectedly sensational culture. Look forward to talks, workshops, demonstrations and curated galleries, whimsical décor and highly Instagrammable surroundings.
One particularly special feature is a dedication to Agnes B. Marshall who was known in Victorian times as the ‘Queen of Ices’. The author of several cookbooks, inventing new technologies and ways to make ice cream, it’s no wonder she was named “one of the greatest culinary pioneers this country has ever seen” by multi-Michelin star chef, Heston Blumenthal. In an interactive theatre performance, visitors are invited to ‘meet’ Agnes, coming full circle in bringing ice cream to life.
‘Ice cream, with its playful connotations and unique history in Britain, is a wonderful context to explore and experience history, art and science.’ – Lisa Slominski, curator of SCOOP: The Wonderful World of Ice Cream
