The legendary Dame Judi Dench is heading up the fifth season of Sheekey Series, a series of candid ‘in conversation’ evenings with some of the West End’s most legendary stars.
Taking place at iconic theatreland favourite J Sheekey, each evening begins with an introduction from host Tim Wapshott, followed by a conversation with the night’s star alongside a three-course menu created by Head Chef Andrew McLay. The series kicks off on 24 February with Dame Judi Dench, who made her acting debut in 1957 with the Old Vic Company before going on to become one of Britain’s most significant theatre actors. She has garnered a whole host of awards over the years, including six BAFTAs, seven Olivier Awards and two Golden Globe Awards.
‘I have always been a huge fan of J Sheekey and its food, who isn’t?’ Dame Judi says. ‘Simply put, J.Sheekey is the theatre establishment in London and I can’t think of anywhere better to be revealing my industry secrets!’
Also taking part in the series is Sir Simon Russell Beale on 20 July, who has starred in films including Dunkirk and The Deep Blue Sea. This will his first notable appearance back in London following his sold-out run on Broadway of The Lehman Trilogy. The third name will be announced at a later date.
The original J Sheekey dates all the way back to 1893, when stallholder Josef Sheekey was given permission by Lord Salisbury to served fish and shellfish in St Martin’s Court. In return, he was asked to supply meals to Salisbury’s after-theatre dinner parties – and so Sheeky’s was born. Over a century later, the restaurant retains its late-Victorian charm.
