Nothing screams Christmas more than celebratory skating at Somerset House. And this year marks the 20th anniversary of Skate at Somerset House with Fortnum & Mason. To commemorate, the annual winter event will be putting on their best spectacle yet, with a fantastic line up of late night skates, cosy restaurants and cafes, and of course, the return of the festive Fortnum’s Christmas Arcade.
Opening on Wednesday 13 November (ideal for those eager to get their skates on early), Fortnum & Mason will be taking over the neoclassical courtyard with a stunning ice rink twinkling with fairy lights, complete with bauble-adorned Christmas trees, polar bear stabilisers (to help the little ones, and perhaps not-s0-little ones balance on the ice), as well as a sizeable marquee-style ‘skate lounge’ for pre and post-skate relaxation.
Fancy a late night skate? To celebrate 20 years of Skate at Somerset House and its major winter exhibition 24/7, Somerset House will be hosting the capital’s first ever spectacular 24-hour skating event on 7th December, while continuing their ‘skate lates’, offering visitors the chance to dance on the ice to live music from renowned DJs Joe Goddard, DJ Yoda and Krankbrother.
When you’re off the ice, indulge in delectable Bailey’s hot chocolate and an array of festive beverages while overlooking the rink, or head to Fortnum’s Lodge for a post-skate sit-down with friends and family. The Lodge will be serving up some of Fortnum’s signature dishes throughout the day, including welsh rarebit, wine and mushroom cheese fondue and delicious apple and cinnamon lattice, but will later transform into a cosy bar, fusing cocktails, mulled wine and boozy hot chocolate.
Be sure to visit Fortnum’s Christmas Arcade in the west wing to pick up a selection of gorgeous gifts that will look delightful underneath the Christmas tree.
Visit somersethouse.org.uk for a range of ‘skate extras’ including chocolate fondue and champagne for two (£38) to indulge in after your skate session.
