There is far more to the London neighbourhood of St James’s than its picturesque streets and storied institutions. Bordered by St James’s Palace, The Ritz, Piccadilly Circus and Trafalgar Square, the area is a destination for contemporary visual culture too. The annual St James’s Art and Design Walk, organised in association with St James’s, seeks to highlight its strongest offerings. The tour begins at the headquarters of Christie’s, the world’s oldest fine art auctioneer and concludes at the ICA, a cradle for radical art and culture. Along the way, take in a wide range of galleries, including the bluest of blue chips, the prime purveyors of prints and editions, and a design powerhouse making its mark on the art world.
On the 17th and 20th of October, St James’s will be joining forces with Wallpaper* magazine to offer access to contemporary art and design galleries. Beginning with a welcome drink at the globally renowned auction house Christies, and ending at the renovated ICA bar these self-guided walks will showcase the best of St James’s contemporary galleries allowing the visitor to become immersed in the thriving London art scene.
Highlights on the walk, which has been curated by the art and design team at Wallpaper*, will include the work of Anni Albers at Alan Cristea; Thomas Dane Gallery’s wide range of sculpture, video and photography exhibitions from their 90’s era British Artists and a Post War Contemporary exhibition at Stern Pissarro. A digital map can be downloaded to allow visitors to follow the route as they pass through the streets of St James’s and each gallery will have a curator or docent on hand to answer questions.
