The Other Art Fair has been a staple in art lover’s calendars since its inception 33 years ago. Now, back for its 34th instalment, The Other Art Fair at The Old Truman Brewery is tackling a huge issue on everyone’s minds right now and taking centre stage in industries such as fashion (search school kids’ protest during London fashion week) – sustainability. Titled Greener Future, The Other Art Fair will be on for 3 days and will showcase art from some of the most exciting emerging designers from around the globe. More specifically, 140 artists from 18 countries over 50% of whom are female!
The types of art presented will range from events, workshops, exhibitions and installations to photography, paintings, sculptures and more. The highlights of this year’s Other Art Fair revolve around its theme of sustainability. In a special programme curated by arts broadcaster and Head of Collections at Soho House Kate Bryan, all 12 of The Other Art Fair editions globally will benefit from this year-long initiative to support and showcase environmentally friendly art, as well as raising awareness of climate change, making sure the art industry is a positive and sustainable one. These highlights include (with more to be announced nearer the time) The Full Circle by Beccy McCray, an immersive artwork using hole-punch-made-snow to shine a light on the vast amount of consumption and waste that goes on during the festive period; Upcycle, which will see visitors’ own artworks to be reworked, leaving with a revived piece of art; and Feedback Wall, to allow visitors to pitch their ideas of how to raise awareness and combat climate change and aid sustainability. It’s a global issue that needs the help and efforts of every single human being, so the more great ideas, the better!
The Other Art Fair this March is just one of many other editions popping up in Brooklyn, Dallas, Chicago, Los Angeles, Melbourne, Sydney, and of course London. The founder, Ryan Stanier, explains this year’s shows will each be “monumental”, and the UK Fair Manager Jessica Chow tells how The Other Art Fair “pushes the boundaries of the traditional art fair”, so whether you’re popping in for a dose of environmentally friendly art or are visiting to discover your new favourite emerging artist, a trip to The Other Art Fair London is a must!
