A spectacular new light festival will take place this winter at culture hub Wembley Park, comprising of illuminative instillations and sculptures, London’s tallest ever LED Christmas tree and a multi-sensory ‘playground’ transforming the Market Square.
Explore Californian artists Rob Jensen and Warren Trezevant’s Sonic Runway, a 100-metre long immersive installation constituting 32 multi-coloured rings, and fusing light and sound to magically enliven Olympic Way. An array of ‘digital birds’ will also journey to the iconic destination, perching on 36 recently planted trees as part of a special installation curated by architectural designer Elyne Legarnisson.
The park has also commissioned an impressive 25-metre LED Christmas tree, The Hopeful Tree, fantastically adorned with over 100,000 low-energy lights. The park’s Market Square will also be transformed into a digitally enhanced winter wonderland, with a spectacular series of music-making installations from innovative musician Michael Davis.
From a mistletoe-embellished heart sculpture to a giant golden Star Box and vibrant commission from established street artist Maser, there will be plenty lighting up Wembley park this Christmas.
The park’s new cultural director, Josh McNorton said: ‘We are really excited for Winterfest, a unique celebration that represents everything that Wembley Park is about; bold, dynamic and fun – everything you could wish for in one place. We look forward to welcoming visitors, residents and shoppers to Winterfest; the perfect Christmas playground in London’s go-to neighbourhood.’
Councillor Muhammed Butt, leader of Brent council, added: ‘With Christmas fast approaching, Brent is extremely excited by the arrival of Winterfest. The festival will showcase the most impressive interactive light displays yet in Wembley Park while offering fantastic shopping, culture and entertainment. The free winter playground will provide festive cheer to families from across Brent as we look ahead to our London Borough of Culture activities throughout 2020. Brent is the place to be this Christmas and we look forward to welcoming everyone to join in the celebrations.’
