Best Canned Wines For Summer 2022

A new wave of brands are changing the face of canned wine

No longer reserved for festivals, canned wine has come on leaps and bounds in recent years. The market has increased by more than 125 per cent in the UK since August 2019 – helped by the pandemic-induced increase in outdoor socialising. Not only are cans much easier to transport than fragile bottles of vino, they’re also better for the environment, being recyclable. This, combined with millennial-friendly slogans and quirky designs, has put canned wine firmly on the map. Here are the ones to buy for your next al fresco gathering.

HUN Mixed Wines

Hun

Launched in 2020 by a group of Londoners, Hun is all about celebrating millennial culture: ‘embracing diversity, engaging with climate change and championing self-expression and community.’ This means fairtrade, vegan canned wines which come in eco-friendly packaging. And, importantly, the wine tastes good, thanks to a partnership with renowned South African wine vineyards in the Stellenbosch region. There are three premium products in the range: pale rosé, Sauvignon Blanc and a low 5.5% abv sparkling rosé.

Kiss of Wine Cans

Kiss of Wine

This new brand was born from an ethos that you shouldn’t have to open a whole bottle to enjoy great quality wine. Its drinks come from four small-batch producers, including a winemaker whose family’s vineyard has supplied wines to Europe’s Michelin-starred restaurants and another who trained in the prestigious Sancerre region. There are eight varieties in the collection, including a 2019 Provence Rosé, a 2019 Sauvignon Blanc from The Loire, and two Italian reds.

Sipful Blood Orange Mimosa

Sipful

If you’re looking for a healthier option, check out Sipful. The company was launched last May by husband-and-wife duo Emily and Darius Darwell, who had grown tired of the dreaded bloat caused by beer. They set out to create a canned alcoholic alternative that wasn’t overly sweet – and Sipful was born. The focus is organic wine with no additives or preservatives, with four sparkling flavours to choose from: Organic Bubbles, Mimosa, Blood Orange Mimosa and Bellini – perfect for celebrating long-awaited catch ups with friends.

BABE Wine

Babe

You’ll most likely have seen these picture-perfect cans cans popping up on your feed – which is no surprise, as they were created by an Instagram influencer, Josh Ostrovsky (AKA The Fat Jewish). Not one for the traditionalists, but if you’re looking for easy-drinking wine for the park Babe should be your go-to.

The Copper Crew Merlot 2018

The Copper Crew

Founded by friends Theo, Sam and Oli, Copper Crew focuses on specifically sourcing wines that can be canned – as not all varieties should be. Thankfully Sam knows his stuff, having studied oenology at Stellenbosch University in South Africa before setting up his own wine label. There are currently three wines in Copper Crew’s range: Rosé, Chenin Blanc and Merlot.

NICE Canned Wine

Nice

This London-based canned wine company has one aim: to be ‘the nicest wine company in the world’. That means selling genuinely nice wine, but also being nice to its customers – and to the planet. Launched in 2019, Nice comes in three flavours: Sauvignon Blanc from Cotes de Gascogne, Pale Rosé from just outside Montpellier, and Malbec from Argentina.

The Uncommon canned wine

The Uncommon

Though the canned wine trend has surged in popularity over the past year, The Uncommon was ahead of the curve, launching canned English sparkling wine back in 2018. Not only are the wines themselves high quality, the cans come with fun illustrations, with each variety given an animal character. There are currently two types to choose from – white or rose wine spritzer – but bubbly versions of both are launching soon.
