The Bird – Bath, Somerset

The West Country

Have you heard about The Bird? Well, you have now – a great value new address in Bath, from experienced hoteliers Ian and Christa Taylor, whose Kaleidoscope Hotels always pack a punch (see No. 15 Great Pulteney, page 000 and Homewood, page 000). Inside this vibrant Bird’s nest, you’ll find 31 upscale, nicely whacky bedrooms, from Tiny Doubles to Deluxe rooms with views of Bath Abbey. Each one is different but they are all full of colour, with statement bedheads, showy chandeliers and interesting pictures as well as divine Hypnos beds, boat baths and plate-sized showers. The fresh and fun looks, with avian nods to the hotel’s name, are most dramatic in the restaurant, The Roost, where a stellar breakfast and elegant afternoon tea are served and the mesmerizing walls make quite a contrast to Regency Bath outside. Just around the corner are some of the city’s best-loved sights, including Great Pulteney Street, the Victoria Art Gallery and Pulteney weir. A real perk: free parking.

SEE

With The Rec, Bath Rugby’s much-loved ground, to the back of the hotel, watching a game is a must. Culture lovers should make a beeline to see the exquisite 17th and 18th century art at the nearby Holburne Museum, or the 1,500 decorative treasures at The Victoria Art Gallery.

EAT

Breakfast, surrounded by The Bird’s playful geometric aviary print wallpaper, is not to be skipped. We’d recommend the classic ‘Full Bird’ breakfast for a hearty start to the day, or for something lighter, the smashed avo on toast, with a poached free-range egg is colourful and delicious.

BUY

Their Malin + Goetz apothecary-style amenities smell amazing and are also great for sensitive skin.

Nota Bene

Request a room at the back of the house for views out over the Recreation Ground and Bath Abbey.
