Fowey Hall – Fowey, Cornwall

Photo 1 of

High above the delightful, literary, waterside town of Fowey, which famously inspired author Daphne du Maurier, stands the handsome country house that was also said to be an inspiration for Toad Hall in Kenneth Grahame’s The Wind in the Willows. Inside, as in every Luxury Family Hotel, the ingredients of a perfect grown-up establishment – heralded by a hall with open fires, antiques and chandeliers – are mixed with the essentials of a children’s paradise: indoor and outdoor play areas, Ofsted-registered crèche, baby listening and more. There are 36 rooms and suites, all different, all beautifully furnished with antiques and pretty fabrics; the oak-panelled dining room is the setting for delicious dinners, with special menus for children. But don’t think you have to have a family with you to come to Fowey Hall: cleverly, it’s a hotel that works just as well for couples.

Don’t miss a visit to St Catherines Castle at the entrance of Fowey Harbour (a 15-minute walk from the hotel), built between approximately 1538 and 1540, in response to fears of an invasion of England by France and the Holy Roman Empire

Pick up a traditional Cornish pasty in town. Quay Bakery is a particular favourite with locals.

Fowey town is bustling with boutique shops for gifts, arts & crafts, fashion and treat’s. Whistlefish is known for its exceptional collection of artwork.

There are many who believe that Fowey Hall was the model for ‘Toad Hall’ in Kenneth Grahame’s ‘The Wind in the Willows’. Certainly, we know that Grahame was a frequent visitor to the Hall.  At the time he was writing letters to his son, which were to be immortalised in his enduring classic, in which the town of Fowey is depicted as ‘The Little Grey Seaport’.
