It surely has been an exciting summer for cricket! On 14 July, England won the 2019 Cricket World Cup at Lord’s Cricket Ground. The final came down to a ‘Golden Over’, which has been widely praised as an exciting and incontestable way of settling an otherwise neck-and-neck match. Winning The World Cup in the year we hosted it has re-injected national passion and excitement into the game, and luckily we have not had to wait long for this rejuvenated hunger for cricket to be satisfied, as (for now at least) England have held off a thrashing from Australia in this summer’s Ashes Series.

Meanwhile, Bede’s U15 ladies cricket team have had their share of cricketing success, being declared national champions for the second time in 2019 on 2 September when they won the National Schools Sports Magazine Final, hosted at Felsted School in Essex.

In the final Bede’s were facing Ipswich who scored 150 for 2 in 20 overs. Bede’s were able to beat this in just 14 overs, with their captain, Freya Kemp, leading by example as she scored an astounding 109 runs and, not surprisingly, being named Player of the Day.

Getting to the final was no doddle; Bede’s beat Hurst, Gildredge House, Mayfield and Brighton College just to win the county group stage, going on to beat King’s School Canterbury in the regional round and Reigate Grammar School in the Quarter Finals. The greatest boundary was still yet to come! Bede’s had to play the final after having already played a morning’s cricket, beating Norwich School in the Semi Finals.

Alan Wells, Director of Cricket at Bede’s says, ‘We are absolutely delighted with the girls’ performance. The team has shown true talent and sportsmanship throughout all of their competitions and training, and both of their prestigious championship wins are thoroughly well deserved.’

Bede’s Senior School is surrounded by 100 acres of Sussex Downs National Park. It is a HMC co-ed day and boarding school with 770 pupils aged 13-18 and is part of the St Bede’s School Trust Sussex. Find their School House listing here.
