A Winning Match: What To Wear To Wimbledon This Summer

Be at the top of your fashion game...

Wimbledon is upon us again, and as one of the biggest sporting events of the social season, what you wear is almost as important as the tennis itself. Despite being more informal than other events, a sense of occasion surrounds the grounds and it is advisable to dress smartly, especially if you have Centre Court tickets. This is our guide to what to wear, from the perfect white dress to the coolest sunglasses…

The C&TH Guide To The Wimbledon Tennis Championships

Is There A Dress Code For Wimbledon?

While there is no strict dress code for Wimbledon, the All England Lawn Tennis Club (AELTC) encourages a smart and respectful dress style for spectators attending the tournament. Traditionally, spectators at Wimbledon tend to dress up for the event, although more formal dress is required for the Royal Box and Centre Court.

There are, however, types of clothing you should avoid wearing. You shouldn’t be wearing overly casual or beachwear-style clothing, such as shorts, flip-flops or t-shirts with offensive slogans.

Second only to the tennis pros’ abilities on the court is the British weather’s ability to turn from blue skies to torrential downpours in a matter of minutes. It is therefore advised to go to Wimbledon prepared for all weather conditions. Bring a light jacket to wear on top of your summer dress just in case, and sunglasses are essential too.

5 Ideas For What To Wear To Wimbledon

1. The White Dress

A classic white dress is the perfect balance of chic and smart for Wimbledon, and a nod to your love of tennis. Our rules for sartorial success are not too tight, and not too short. Opt for a cotton, knee-length number to keep cool in the heat. Simple or with detailing, the choice is up to you.

2. The Colourful Dress

Andy Murray’s wife Kim Sears has long been a champion of the colourful dress at the tournament. Pair with a denim jacket and wedges like her, or go the classic route with a blazer and heeled pumps.

3. Dressy Jumpsuit

If you’re after something a little more formal, try a jumpsuit. Opt for one in a luxe fabric like silk or satin and simply pair it with heels, a clutch and a good hat (see our favourite milliners here) for a polished look.

4. Blazer & Trousers Combo

Not a dress kind of person? You can always wear trousers and a blazer (as mentioned, for the unpredictable weather). Choose a well-fitted blazer in neutral or pastel tones and pair it with tailored trousers. Complete the look with a crisp shirt or a blouse and formal, yet comfy, shoes.

5. Smart Casual

If you prefer a more casual yet put-together outfit, you can easily tone things down by pairing your shirt or blouse with jeans, chinos or shorts. Top it off with a cardigan or blazer, as well as a comfy pair of shoes (we’d suggest ballet flats, trainers or loafers).
