Suffering From Maskne? Try These

The best products for acne-prone skin

Are face masks and stress playing havoc with your skin? Adult acne is on the rise, largely because of the need to wear face coverings, which can lead to blocked pores and a build-up of bacteria on the surface of the skin. You can read our guide to preventing and treating maskne with Dr Uliana Gout at the London Aesthetic Medicine (LAM) Clinic, but alongside taking steps to minimise your risks of developing breakouts, the skincare products you opt for are also important. Check out our guide to the best skincare products for maskne and acne-prone skin.

Skincare Products To Deal With Maskne & Adult Acne

First up, if you suffer from breakouts and maskne, you need to do a quick audit of your skincare products and analyse the ingredients in your regime. If you are prone to spots, you should avoid oil-based products, including SPFs (we’ve included a great SkinCeuticals one in our edit, below), and consider adding a mild exfoliant to your regime. Salicylic acid is a mild exfoliant that is a great option for a daily cleanser if you have oily skin that is prone to breakouts. How To Deal With Maskne, Expert Advice

Dr Uliana Gout: ‘Consider a professional treatment’

“Homecare and DIY fixes for pores, congestion, dull skin, and spots often involves the overuse of exfoliants which cause more downtime due to being poorly formulated. I often hear patients who also overuse facial oils without understanding that they invite infection, dullness, congestion, blemishes, etc and in fact do the opposite to what they are hoping to achieve.”

Laura Rudoe, founder of ADAPTOLOGY says: ‘Don’t over-exfoliate’

“Blemish prone skin is a sign that the skin is out of balance. Our first instinct is often to treat it harshly but blemish prone skin can actually be quite sensitive. Overly harsh cleansing and exfoliation of the skin can disrupt the skin barrier layer and the naturally protective flora of the skin can become disrupted. Overgrowth of acne bacteria causes the skin to produce 5 alpha reductase – an enzyme that makes it inflamed and encourages the over production of oil. Chronic inflammation can lead to both premature ageing and hyperpigmentation and scarring. What is needed is a way to bring the skin back into balance. Adaptology has been specifically formulated for stressed, problem skin, with powerful bioactives from the most extreme ecosystems on the planet. Plants sourced from these regions have been forced to adapt to harsh conditions and are supremely equipped to protect against and reverse the effects of skin stress.”

Our advice: ‘Change your mask regularly to avoid maskne’

Above all, ensure you are regularly washing and changing your face masks to help prevent the transfer of bacteria onto your skin. Consider packing a couple of clean ones in a sealed bag if you have a long day of taking it on and off. And if you are suffering with breakouts, don’t make the problem worse by touching your face.
