Iconic handbag designer Anya Hindmarch on re-discovering shirts, Zoom-meeting style and why sustainability is always on her mind.

My Style: Anya Hindmarch

Anya Hindmarch

What was your inspiration or theme behind your current S/S 20 collection?

I am fascinated by the subject of rope, from the craftsmanship of how it is made and the ancient traditions, to the artistry that came from long passages at sea when it was all they had to create with. These pieces are really special.

What are your favourite pieces from the collection and why?

I love the rope seahorse which is very complicated to make. I also love the squid and the rope eyes on the baskets. I love the rope handles on our new rope bag bow.

What can we expect to see from you in A/W 2020?

I have been really looking at waste in our industry and how to use materials sensibly and beautifully without waste. This is a theme that has started out of our I am a plastic bag project.

Do you have a muse? If so, who?

Yes me but not as a muse but more as my own harshest critic!

Whose style do you really admire?

Anyone who dresses for themselves and doesn’t really bother with currents fads. I think it is interesting when people have their own style.

As you’re working from home, what is your daily uniform?

Jeans mostly, with crisp white shirts.

Do you have any words of wisdom for working from home?

Embrace it. Use the extra non-travel time wisely to do something for you – exercise, read, bake, call friends.

What outfit is making you feel your best self at the moment?

My straw Birkenstocks have become a very good friend. My Studio Nicholson whites shirts and an old Philip Lim orange shirt works well for Insta lives.

What are you wearing for any Zoom/Skype meetings?

As above, plus an old Valentino graphic print shirt.

What have you rediscovered in your wardrobe?

Shirts!

Power dressing: what outfit makes you feel like you can conquer the world?

A great handbag (obviously), plus I feel in charge with great stationary/notebooks/pencil cases, and my labelled wash-bags make me feel together when I am feeling a bit out of control.

Has being at home made you think about the way you buy or consume products?

Yes, although I have been thinking about this non stop for the last two years. Less but better is the only way forward. And timeless and responsible.

I Am A Plastic Bag

Three items that would really pick you up if they were delivered to your door?

A professional pedicure. Some more perfume from my favourite place in Morocco. Great soap.

What are you wearing for your daily exercise?

Tracksuit bottoms and t-shirts from American Vintage mostly as they are so soft and Allbirds new running trainers which are amazing.

What are you most enjoying about WFH?

Time to think. Daytime meals with the kids. Less meetings! (Although too much time on Zoom.)

When you are able to go on your next holiday where will you go and name 3 items you never go on holiday without?

I would like to go to the English countryside or to St Vincent & The Grenadines. I will take my Walton basket with my initials on, my vanity kit washbag and my favourite long men’s shirts that I had made and like to wear on the beach.

What will you be wearing for the party when we’re all allowed outside again?

Ozzie Clark. Always.
