Review: The Bird, Bath

First let’s address the elephant (Netflix mega-hit) in the room; thanks to Bridgerton, Bath is one of the most in-demand staycation destinations for 2022. Hotels in this historic city must do more than ever to stand out from the crowd. The Bird, a quirky boutique property just a stone’s throw from the city centre, soars above the competition. Rebecca Cox reviews.

STAY

In a city famed for its classic Bath stone buildings, many properties opt for classical interiors to compliment the exteriors. If maximalism is more your vibe, The Bird’s interiors are an antidote to the traditional design and minimalist décor you’ll find throughout the city. On first entering the hotel the first vision is a specially commissioned blue mosaic bird-themed china reception desk by artist Candace Bahouth, scouted by the owner when she was exhibiting in the city. This sets the tone for the rest of the hotel, a treasure trove of art and curios collected from across the globe, a blend of modern and classical art and pieces sourced from all over (our favourite is a glittering light and mirror duo from The Ritz in Paris, sitting humbly in a corridor). The 31 rooms are individually designed in a varied and cheerful colour palette, with original art works, luxe finishes and velvet upholstery. Many offer views across Bath Abbey and the city centre, separated from the hotel by Bath’s croquet club (what else?).

EAT

The newly launched Plate Restaurant is one of the main draws of The Bird, offering a veritable feast of great British dishes. Head Chef Leon Smith draws on the finest local seasonal produce for a rotating menu of tempting dishes with hero ingredients at centre stage. The service elevates the experience, with a knowledgeable and friendly staff from start to finish, the ‘start’ being a drink at the bar and the best Lychee Martini in the city, ‘finish’ being sticky toffee pudding (divine) and a glass of Taittinger. Dishes to sample include the heritage tomato salad and the plaice main. Breakfast is more of the same, the only dilemma being whether to go healthy with granola and a smoothie or (pick this option) a bloody Mary and a fry-up.

Elsewhere in the city, check out The Oven for a top quality pizza or if Oysters and Champagne is more your vibe, Portofino is delightful. You’ll find the best rum cocktails in town (and the cutest street spot for an alfresco pit stop) at Fidel’s Rum Bar.

THE FINAL WORD

A little bird told us that this boutique hotel has also got a luxe hot-tub suite with a private terrace. Next time, we’re setting up nest there.
