The Swan At Streatley Hotel Review

STAY

As Thameside locations go, they don’t come prettier than this. Located by the bridge separating the picturesque villages of Goring and Streatley (roughly an hour from London by car), this 47-bedroom property overlooks the river and well-manicured garden lawns. The grounds include the property’s own private island for short walks, or those looking to really stretch their legs will find dozens of riverside or country walking routes; you can even jump in a kayak and paddle along to Pangbourne (and hop on a train back). The newly refurbished rooms are clean and comfortable, with giant, soft beds; opt for a riverside room for plenty of morning light and a gorgeous sunrise from your window seat. The rooms are spacious and there are family and dog-friendly rooms, but if you’re visiting in a busy period, pack your earplugs as the walls are thin (we were woken by an enthusiastic shooting party in the wee hours).

DO

With miles of countryside to explore, whether you want to take to the water for onsite paddle boarding or stick to terra firma and set off for an invigorating country hike, The Swan is the perfect base from which to explore the surrounding hills and river paths. There is a small but perfectly-formed gym on-site for guests to enjoy, or more adventurous wellness enthusiasts should check out the programme of events including riverside yin and yang yoga and aerial yoga workshops (followed by brunch).

EAT

The Swan at Streatley is home to an outpost of the popular Coppa Club, where cosy dining spaces, good food and great service are guaranteed. With a stunning outlook right on the river, leisurely weekend breakfasts are a hit year-round (although opting for breakfast in bed if you’re in a riverside room is an absolute treat). From sharing plates enjoyed with drinks to fresh pastas, pizzas and tasty super-salads, this is dependable family-friendly dining at its best. Check out the tiramisu martini for a riverside evening tipple, or recover from your winter hike with a matcha latte by the fire; this local favourite really feels like a home away from home.

THE FINAL WORD

This sprawling riverside favourite offers the three Cs: Comfy beds, Comfort food and Country pursuits for all the family. Take the kids, take the dog, get out there and enjoy the Great British countryside. And order pancakes in bed to feel thoroughly spoiled (even if your fellow guests disturbed your sleep).
